THE HISTORY OF DE HVIDE SVANER CAMPING
De Hvide Svaner Camping has been the setting for our guests' happy holiday memories since 1972.
The countess and the campsite
The story of De Hvide Svaner begins at Saltø Estate, just over five kilometers from the campsite. Here, in the beautiful estate buildings that have been the home and workplace of the von Scheel-Plessen family for over 300 years, the idea for the campsite emerged in the 1960s.
It was Count Carl and his wife, Countess Anita von Scheel-Plessen, who took the lead in their desire to use the unique plot of land by the fjord, close to the fishing village of Karrebæksminde, to create a campsite for the Danish people.
In 1972, Countess Anita and her son, Count Carl-Alexander, were able to open De Hvide Svaner.
Countess Anita and Count Carl-Alexander, with hard work, vision, and warmth, created a campsite that soon became the backdrop for many Danes' best holiday experiences. Many of the regular guests today still have fond memories of the charismatic Countess. Stories are told of how she gathered guests around the campfire for storytelling or painted with the campsite’s children.
The countess's grandson runs the campsite today
The late Countess Anita von Scheel-Plessen followed her "heart's project," De Hvide Svaner, closely, but today, it is her grandson, Count Carl-Christian von Scheel-Plessen, who continues the tradition at one of Zealand's largest and most popular campsites.
Carl-Christian von Scheel-Plessen is a regular at De Hvide Svaner, always ready for a chat with guests, and at the campsite's many celebrations and special occasions, the warm-hearted Count and his family are a natural gathering point.
As Count Carl-Christian von Scheel-Plessen himself says: "We are a family running a campsite for families." So, not much has changed at De Hvide Svaner since its opening in 1972.
Celebrating 50 years in 2022
Since De Hvide Svaner Camping opened just before Easter in 1972, we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2022.
Throughout the season, we celebrated our beautiful campsite, reminiscing about all the happy guests we've hosted over the years. This included a small exhibition featuring old photographs, holiday descriptions, invoices, and other memorabilia from the last 50 years at the campsite.
